People are not who they seem. One person who is not who they seem is Calpurnia. So far through the book, every time that Jem and Scout have seen her; she has been talking formally. She talks with good punctuation and always calls people mister or miss. She also has good manners and never slurs her words. Calpurnia talks like she is actually white and not African American. Additionally, since Calpurnia is educated; she has great grammar. When Scout and Jem went to church, they were surprised that Calpurnia talked normal. She talked without any formalities, which caught the kids off guard since they had not heard this side of Calpurnia. Atticus was the oddball out of all of the fathers and seems boring. He is always reading and rarely plays sports. On the rare occasion that he plays, he never wants to be tackled. Unlike Atticus, most of the fathers in the town play in a big football game while he is on the sideline. Atticus explains that he is way too old and does not want to break his neck. Not only does Atticus not play sports, but he never hunts or wants to touch a gun. When Jem and Scout got their air rifles; Atticus did not want to teach them to shoot. Despite the kids thinking that he is boring; Atticus is quite the opposite. He has many skills and is interesting. When old Tim Johnson had the rabies, Atticus shot the dog from a long distance (killed it on Radleys property). When Atticus younger, he was even called, “One-Shot Finch.” Even though Atticus was an expert marksman; he quit hunting because he felt like he had an unfair advantage over the animals. Additionally, he also is really good at checkers. Miss Maudie described him as, “...
