The fourth chapter begins when Scout plans to go by the Radley’s home every day after school. As she walks home, something catches her eye. Scout goes towards this object which is in a tree in the Radley yard. She finds chewing gum in it. She tests it to make sure it isn’t poisoned and eats it. That reminds me of myself because I often test certain food before I eat it just to be safe, but at the same time, why would Scout eat it? It could’ve been sitting out for a while and bugs could’ve crawled all over it. Jem comes home to make her spit it out. Times goes by and it is the last day of school. After school, Jem and Scout find the same thing in the tree. They also see a jewelry box decorated with more tinfoil and 2 Indian head pennies are …show more content…
Next, Dill asks Scout to marry him. Why would Dill ask that question? Is he serious? This shocks Scout at first. As time goes on, Dill doesn’t really hang out with Scout so she beats him up. Since she was rejected from Dill and Jem, Scout goes over to Miss Maudie Atkinson, a neighbor who doesn’t like kids. Miss Maudie Atkinson spends a lot of her time gardening and cooking. The two talk for a while and then Scout asks if Miss Atkinson thinks that Boo Radley is dead. Her response was that she never saw a coffin come out of the house so she assumes not. They go on about the history of the Radley’s. Miss Atkinson sends Scout home with some pound cake. When Scout returns home, she finds the boys planning to put a note through the window of Boo Radley’s house. Scout gets in on the plan and helps the boys. They arrive at the house at night and they have trouble moving the pole around so it reaches the window. When I read that the kids left the house, I wondered if Calpurnia noticed them leaving. The pole is too short apparently. Dill rings the doorbell expecting to see Boo Radley but instead, he sees Atticus. I wonder why Atticus is there in the first place. Shouldn’t he be at home? Atticus yells at the kids saying that they should stop bothering Boo and that they should stop playing this …show more content…
Dill wanted to go on a walk without Scout. Scout becomes very suspicious. Dill and Jem tries to convince Scout to come along. Scout refuses at first but when they call her a “girl,” she gets offended and goes with them. They walk to the Radley’s house. Once they arrive, Jem and Scout raised Dill up to try to get a glimpse of Boo Radley but they only saw curtains. Jem moves to the porch to look through the windows. Jem sees a man move towards the window but the man moves away. The trio runs away. As Scout was running, she trips and she hears shots fired. They go under the fence and Jem’s pants get caught. Jem is forced to leave his pants behind. They return to see the neighbors crowding around the Radley’s house. Miss Atkinson is one of the many who was in the crowd. She told the kids that Mr. Radley was shooting at a Negro. When people begin to notice that Jem’s pants are missing, Dill tells them that they were playing strip poker. Jem then says that they were playing with matches because gambling a sin in their town. I wonder why it is that bad to gamble but it isn’t that bad to play with matches if you a young child. Atticus takes them home and Dill finally leaves. Later that night, Scout worries about Boo Radley seeking revenge. Jem decides, in the middle of the night, to retrieve his
