To Kill A Mockingbird Chapter 12-13 Writing

Many people do stuff because they love it, because the crave it, because it’s their passion in life, and they want nothing more. But, some people do things because that's just how life set them up. It was their fate, their density, the reason they became what they are today. For Atticus in the book To Kill A Mockingbird, his trial on Tom Robinson is this case. It’s his “one case in his lifetime that affects him personally…” according to page 101. This is his case that will really mean something to him, and that means he has to keep fighting for Tom, even if the people of Maycomb disagree.

In the book, Atticus replies to Scout, “The one thing that doesn’t abide by majority rule is a person’s conscience.”

Someone who doesn’t base their life on the facts, but on the feelings inside of them. At the end of chapter 12, we learn that Aunt Alexandra is coming to live with Scout and Jem. Later in chapter 13, we also learn that Atticus invited Aunt Alexandra because he realized they need a mother figure. Scout needs someone to help her with clothes a boys, and Atticus just isn’t capable of doing that on his own. Although he didn’t want to admit it, he has needed Aunt Alexandra for a while. His conscience finally told him what needed to be done. He didn’t look at facts and statistics that predicted Scout would turn out to be a horrible lady if Aunt Alexandra came, it was just something he felt in his gut, because he is a person of conscience.

Being a person of conscience isn’t always a good thing, though. Sometimes, your conscience isn’t always right. For example, page 30 says, “Catching Walter Cunningham in the schoolyard gave me some pleasure, but when I was rubbing his nose in the dirt Jem came by and told me to stop.” Here, Scout’s conscience told her that because she got in trouble for standing up for Walter, he should be punished. Then, even after her conscience told her to beat him up, it also told her that it’s a good thing, because she is enjoying
