In Chapter 15 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout’s compassionate actions eliminate the tension of the lynching mob. Scout notices a man in the crowd of lynchers, Mr. Cunningham, she then tries stubbornly to tell him to say hi for her to Walter, his son. He refuses to respond but eventually does and tells her, he will tell Walter she said hi. He then breaks up the group of lynchers. This shows how Scout’s compassion towards Walter saved Tom and Atticus from any more confrontation. Another way Scout uses compassion to eliminate contention is by getting Atticus to allow Dill to stay at their house after he ran away.
