Courage is something everybody needs in their life to accomplish almost anything, Jem has to learn courage to help him become more civilized. Jem learns this after he had read to Mrs.Dubose and found out she had died from Atticus. Atticus saying, “I wanted you to see something about her...I wanted you to see what real courage is, …its when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what...Mrs.Dubose won”(149). Atticus tells to Jem that he had wanted him to see “what real courage is” and learn that meaning from the life of Mrs.Dubose when he had read to her. Walter Cunningham has been invited to Scouts house for dinner but during the meal, Scout makes rude remarks about Watlers food habits and Calpurnia has to talk to her because of it. Calpurnia saying, “Don’t matter who they are, anybody sets foot in this house’s yo‘ comp’ny, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty! Yo‘ folks might be better’n the Cunninghams but it don’t count for nothin’ the way you’re disgracin‘ ’em—if you can’t act fit to eat at the table you can just set here and eat in the kitchen!”(25). Calpurnia has to tell Scout thats its rude to make negative remarks about Walters habits and that she needs to give respect when a guest enters their house. This shows that Scout is getting a lesson on what respect is so that she will learn to be more respectful among those around her and guests. Scout learning what respect is helps her be a more mature and civilized person because she will be polite and courteous to those around her and not defame them because they act differently then she does. Being able to be courteous towards someone and giving them proper treatment is a valuable lesson that Scout learns that helps her become a more civilized
