In “ To Kill a Mockingbird,” the author creates a certain effect using diction and imagery which perceives Maycomb County as a sluggish and inactive place. “ Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself.” This states that because of Maycomb County is inactive that it is spiralling down into an abyss. Imagery supports its inactivity when the author said, “ the courthouse sagged in the square” and “bony mules.” The courthouse not being upright shows us that Maycomb County is almost a rundown place similar to Mineral Wells, Texas. Mules being bony states that the farmers haven’t been farming crops or they have been slowing down and only worrying about feeding their family. Diction was used when the author said,
