Discrimination is the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories. These categories can range from race, age, sexuality, occupation and so on. With so much diversity in the world people see the differences more than the similarities and more on the faults than the Perfections. In To Kill a Mockingbird and The Help it shows how the main protagonists react to discrimination of sexuality, age, and race. In To Kill a Mockingbird the story focuses around Scout as a child and how she sees and responds to the world around her. The Help is written 30 years after To Kill a Mockingbird and centered around Skeeter, a young adult that returned home from college and finds herself trying to help colored people. For example, when Skeeter is on her first date with Stuart she gets offended when he mentions that all girls only go to college to get a husband when she responds “I’m sorry, but were you dropped on your head as an infant or were you just born stupid.” (Taylor). Skeeter responds with anger immediately and without hesitation defending her ideals and calling Stuart stupid. She believes that no matter what race or sex someone is it should not be the chains that bind you. In addition, when Hilly was talking about segregating whites and blacks bathrooms because blacks are disease ridden, Skeeter responds with anger commenting “Maybe we should build you a bathroom outside.” (Taylor). Skeeter was mad that her friend would discriminate against blacks like they are not human beings just like her. Skeeter believes that everybody should be treated equally. This shows how Skeeter disapproves of social standards in the 1960’s restrict women and colored people.
Skeeter and Scout are both girls faced with the problem of discrimination and both react with anger and confusion. In To Kill a Mockingbird and The Help both Protagonists encounter many forms of discrimination. They both react in similar ways, they both get angry when they see discrimination and question society. They do have their differences though, Skeeter shows her anger and frustration when faced with discrimination, however Scout keeps it
