In the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, there were three characters that I believed had empathy. Empathy being the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Empathy is known to be a great power that people are proud to reach. In fact, the three character that I believed had empathy were Scout, Atticus, and Tom Robinson. Scouts empathy had been towards Boo Radley and Mrs. Dubose. Atticus’s empathy had been shown towards the Ewells and the Maycomb negroes. Lastly, Tom Robinson’s empathy had been shown towards Mayella Ewell. Overall, knowing the fact that To Kill a Mockingbird didn’t have fair treatment towards whites and black at the time and that understanding one another wasn’t something that was done as much in the novel, empathy was something that was most definitely shown maturing the minds of people more and more.

First off, Scout had shown empathy towards Boo Radley. Scout has learned how she was scared of Boo Radley and how she use to make fun of him. Although, she has also recognized that she can get to really know and understand Boo Radley. Scout says “Boo was our neighbor. Scout had matured enough to recognize the feelings of Boo Radley and Mrs. Dubose and how it’s not as easy for everyone. Atticus had been grateful for what the Maycomb’s had given him and also had understood Bob Ewell’s motives and how he does things. As well as, Tom recognizing the life of Mayella and how she was treated; to actually go and help her out even though he had been accused for raping her.
