Everybody has courage whether they show it or not. Through out everyone's life they need courage to get through it, and everyone has courage they just might not realize it. In many stories courage is what makes the characters themselves. In the story To Kill a Mockingbird courage shapes who characters are.

One character that courage has a huge impact on is Atticus Finch. "For a number of reasons," said Atticus. "The main one is, if I didn't I couldn't hold up my head in town, I couldn't represent this country in the legislature, I couldn't even tell you or Jem not to do something again." (Lee 100) Atticus has to be brave for The whole town of Maycomb because then he would have no authority. If Atticus didn't have courage he wouldn't be the powerful man he is to the town. He is one of the only people who can help the town, and without him having courage the town would not do very well. "In all his life, Jem had never declined a dare." (Lee 14) He has to have courage or he wouldn't have accept every dare. Jem knew he had courage that why he did all the dares. Accepting dares could end up being a bad idea because even if you have courage you can still get injured. Some of the things Jem did got him into some bad situations. "Jem threw open the gate and sped to the side of the house, slapped it with him palm and ran back past us, not waiting to see if his foray was successful. Dill and I followed on his heels. Safely on our porch, panting and out of breath, we looked back." (Lee 13) Jem knows the dares are risky but he doesn't care he just wants people to like him.
