“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing for us but make music for us to enjoy... they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill A Mockingbird.” (Lee 119). This quote from the novel To Kill A Mockingbird can partially explain one of the main themes in the book. Three of the main characters, Scout, Boo Radley, and Tom Robinson are all examples of the mockingbird in this book. They are all forced to undergo fallacious situations that they are uncomfortable in, and don’t particularly enjoy. Being a mockingbird means that, even though you have done nothing wrong, you are still punished and looked down upon. Throughout To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout, Tom Robinson, and Boo Radley all represent a mockingbird. Scout can be a good model for the theme revolving around mockingbirds. Scout can be a mockingbird when you consider the sexist and materialistic events she has to take part in, simply because she is a girl. It is explained in the book that it is a sin to kill a mockingbird because they cause no harm. It’s a sin to offend and be inequitable to people who have never caused you or others harm. The novel’s title revolves around this theme to be respectful towards everyone, despite their ways of life that others may not approve of. Society tells you that certain people should act a certain way, and if they do not, then you have the right to disregard and belittle them. But, from this book and these characters, you can learn that everybody is different and has their own limitations. You learn that you should treat everyone fairly and kindly, or else you will be considered the person who is smaller and lesser than
