In chapter 12 of To Kill a Mockingbird, Author Harper Lee uses irony to develop the theme that racism isn’t simply toward people of color, it is also delivered by them. When Calpurnia, Jem and Scout arrive at First Purchase Church, most people receive them well. However, one girl named Lula objects to their being at a Negro church, saying that Calpurnia “’…ain’t got no business bringing white chillun here- they got their church, we got our’n’” (Lee 158). This statement is ironic because, in a novel focused on white prople acting racist towards African-Americans, we see the reverse of that, with an African-American showing racism toward white children. Calpurnia protests against Lula, saying that, “’ [Jem and Scout’s} my compn’y’” (Lee 158).
