Moral courage ~ To be or not to be
What is the right thing to do? The “right thing” to do is often times, very subjective. It’s evident that the concept of right or wrong varies from person to person and it should be. It’s apparent that we all have our own unique individual mindsets that enable us to embody our thoughts into reality. Moral courage in its purest form, is having the courage or strength despite certain obstacles to do the right thing. Likewise, in the tale of “To kill a mockingbird”, it seems apparent from the very start, what was the right thing to do. An older version of the main character, “Jean louise scout”, who reminisces about her past, plays a prominent role in telling the narrative of “To kill a mockingbird” in a very mature and knowledgeable fashion. In comparison, a younger rendition grants the reader a more welcoming and trustworthy point of view that offers a firsthand perspective of all the situations within the Novel. The use of Point of view helps develop the theme of moral courage because it allows the reader to witness the progression of a young “Jean louise scout” and her levels of growth throughout the Novel. An example of moral courage within the literary element of “Perspective” is when Jean louise scout defended her father, Atticus, from the racist slurs that her cousin was throwing at him as well as her family. This was due to her father siding with the “Tom Robinson” case despite overwhelmingly negative feedback and hate from the racist environment of Maycomb. This showed moral courage due to scout standing up for her father and fighting back in his honor. However, it wasn’t the most suitable way of defending her father but it was courageous
