Prejudice in To Kill a Mockingbird Did you know that over 68% of all African Americans think that racial prejudice still an issue in modern times (Huffpost)? The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee reveals that prejudice does not only harm an individual, but it also contributes to a larger problem in society. In the novel, the majority of the town of Maycomb, Alabama, is prejudice towards blacks. During a trial against an innocent black man, a white man argued that he raped the white man’s daughter with no evidence, but won anyways. The text says, “Judge Taylor was polling the jury, guilty… guilty… guilty… guilty” (Lee 282; ch. 21). Despite no evidence, Tom was voted guilty. The jury was biased and consequently chose the white man over the black man, just because of his skin color. Since the jury was prejudiced against blacks, so the white man had to win. The final quote that showed the most prejudice is near the end of the book after Tom was sent to jail and killed. Bob Ewell, the man that filed the trial against Tom, was so happy when Tom died. He says, “One down and about two more to go” (Lee 323; ch 25). Bob celebrated when Tom died because of his prejudice against blacks, and his assumptions that they all are criminals. If Tom was a white man, Bob would have not acted the same way. Their wouldn't have even been a trial if Tom was white, which shows how prejudice the town is. To this day, people everywhere still make assumptions with racial prejudice. It isn't just one or two people. It is 68% of our country’s black population. Most of Maycomb’s population was consumed by this demon, and it is their fault that Tom Robinson died. He was an innocent man and was killed for his skin tone.
