Race relations and the ways people of different races interact with each other and others based on prejudice was greatly demonstrated in Chapter 12 of the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Calpurnia was the main example of race relations throughout her bringing Scout and Jem to church and her act of code-switching throughout the visit.

When Scout and Jem attend Calpurnia's church with her while Atticus was away, many interesting events took place. The group first walked in and everything was going well until they came into contact with a member of the church known as Lula. Lula approached Calpurnia and the children and addressed them extremely rudely, asking Calpurnia why she brought “...white chillun to nigger church? (p. 158).” When speaking to the three she also said, “You ain't got no business bringin’ white chillun here- they got their church, we got our’n (p.158). As I read this I wasn't met with much shock. The white people of Maycomb did not treat the people of color with respect so to hear Lula say these things wasn't all that surprising; why should she respect those who don't respect her? After Lula is removed from the scene Calpurnia and the children took their seats and the service began. When it came time to sing the hymns, Calpurnia's son Zeebo made his way to the front of the church, reciting the lines and the people in the church then singing it back. Just like Scout, I was very confused when I read this. I had never heard of something being done this way and because of Scouts observation of there being no hymn books when they walked in, I figured hymns would not be sang.
