Selfless acts lead to negative consequences in To Kill a Mockingbird

To Kill a Mockingbird is a good book to show people how discrimination was back in the day. It also shows the friendships and how people would get hurt by just doing nothing but good. The theme I am going to write about is “Selfless acts can lead to negative consequences.” When Jem and Scout recieve air guns for Christmas, Atticus tells them that he would prefer them to practice by shooting tin cans. But he knows that it will be hard for them to not shoot at living things like birds. Atticus tells them that they can shoot as many blue jays as they want but they should never shoot a mockingbird because it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.

Mr. Link Deas, Tom's boss, rose from the audience and announced “ I just want the whole lot of you to know one thing right now. That boy's worked for me eight years an' I ain't had a speck o'trouble outa him. Not a speck.”(ch.19 pg. 195) This shows that Tom is hard working because even his owner is willing to stand up and admit in court that he is hardworking. Tom Robinson is hard working because he would go out of his way to do his work right and help others. In trial, Tom Robinson explains that while he was walking home from work he had to pass the Ewell place and Mayella Violet Ewell asked him to come inside the fence and chop up a chiffarobe for her. I think that the theme “selfless acts lead to negative consequences” is a good theme because it teaches us both as individual and as a whole society that we should not hurt the ones we love and care about those that care about us. We should not judge anybody and not make them do anything that they don't feel comfortable doing. Like in the story, Tom and Boo did selfless acts and they both had negative consequences for doing
