To Kill A Mockingbird Essay A wise woman Banksy once said, “We were all humans until race disconnected us, religion seperated us, politics divided us, and wealth classified us.” This quote really relates to the book To Kill a Mockingbird because Banksy states that we are all born the same but until race, religion, politics and wealth “separates” and “defines us”. In the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, this book is in the time period of the 1930’s and racism was very prevalent. In the book 2 young children Scout and Jem’s father, Atticus, takes on a case representing a man named Tom Robinson who is accused of assaulting and raping Mayella Ewell. Little do the children know that they will realize the racism in their home town Maycomb …show more content…
Society has carved Atticus into who he is because of how he grew up and realizing right from wrong. To begin with, during the Tom Robinson court case when the jury convicted Tom Robinson as guilty Atticus says, “It's not time to worry”...-...”Were not through yet. There’ll be an appeal, you can count on that”(Lee,285). This means that Atticus wants to do what's right even if it's against the norms. Atticus feels the need to defend Tom Robinson even if he gets hate for it, and he says that every lawyer has a case that will change their life and said this is it. When Atticus’s community is against him, he still stays with the case for the sake himself, Jem, Scout, and for Tom Robinson. In Addition, In the 1930’s racism was normal. For racism being normal having people against it was rare in the South. Being from the South, it shaped Atticus to stand up against society. When the court case was over Jem tells Atticus that this case wasn't fair and Atticus tells Jem “You’ll see white men cheat black men everyday of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it- whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash”(Lee, 295) Once again, Atticus shows his personality and who he really is in this quote.
