Race, class, and gender can determine how powerful people are. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Mayella Ewell is a white girl who said she was raped and lives in a dirty place. Mayella is not treated well: “ Tom Robinson was probably the only person who was ever decent to her” (“The loneliest Person in the World”). Race, class, and gender determine how powerful she is. Mayella is not powerful, because of her being in a low class, she is a girl, and even though she is white, not many white people want to be around her.

Do to Tom Robinson being black he was scared of Mayella and the repercussions after she kissed him. This seems to give her power over Tom however, it is obvious that Mayella does not have power, because neither race will associate with her: “White people wouldn't have anything to do with her, because she lived among pigs; Negros wouldn't have anything to do with her, because she was white” (“The Loneliest Person in the World”). Since, Tom said that Mayella kissed him and not many white people will want to be around her for doing that. Her race seems to make her powerful, but in the end she has no power, because neither race accepts her.
