To Kill Mockingbird (Trial Summary) chapter 17-21

The first witness Mr. Heck Tate took the stand to be questioned by Mr. Gilmer the prosecutor. Mr. Gilmer asked Mr. Tate to explain the events. Mr. Tate explains that Mr. Ewell came and got him on the night of November 21. Mr. Tate then explained that Mr. Ewell come and out him, and said his girl Mayella was raped by a colored man named Tom Robinson.

They were no objections from Atticus. Mr. Tate explained how the girl confirmed what Mr. Ewell told him. Mr. Gilmer ended his questions for this witness, and the Judge asked Atticus if he had questions for this witness, and Atticus did. Atticus was very interested in if they called doctor, and asked Mr. Tate many times.

Mr. Gilmer objected, and the judge allowed Atticus question. Atticus basically called Mayella a liar. Atticus wanted to know how a crippled man rape fairly strong girl who claimed to fight like crazy. Atticus also wanted to know why the other children didn’t hear her scream. Atticus asked her if it as her father or Tom. She didn’t answer, and Atticus continued by asking her if her father was the one that beat her. Mayella kept with story she told before. Mayella gets dramatic and doesn’t answer anymore. Mr. Gilmer said state rested, and the judge agreed.

Atticus calls his witness Thomas Robinson, and Atticus induced him. Tom did some time because he couldn’t pay the fine. Atticus began to question Tom, and he asked him if he knew Mayella, and he said he did. Tom work for Mr. Link Deas, after that tom explained that he passes the Ewells every day after work, and that Mayella always had something for him to do, and he did because he felt sorry for her. He also never stepped on their property without invitation.
