Women have suffered unjust treatment for years. Today, women are still fighting for full rights. Women are equal to men, however men often receive a higher wage than a women for the same job. Scout often wants to hang out with her older brother. Her brother is reluctant to play with her on a account of her being a “girl”. In order for Scout to have fun with her brother she cannot act as herself. “I was not so sure, but Jem told me I was being a girl, that girls always imagined things, that’s why other people hated them so, and if I started behaving like one I could just go off and find someone to play with”(Lee 54). Scout asks Atticus why women are not on jury’s. Atticus’s response implies that women cannot handle what happens in court. Scout believes women are just as capable as men and can accomplish anything they set their mind to. Scout is not the typical girl in Maycomb, she is an example that not all girls are fragile. Scout is getting used to being neglected by Jem, but then her new fiance neglects her! Unfortunately, beating Dill up made no difference. Scout is left to hang out with Calpurnia, the cook, until the boys summon her to play. Scout hates being left out, however she is forced to be with Calpurnia, who is not her favorite person. Women have struggled for years to receive civil rights.
