Literature is a vehicle that essentially provides insight to individuals about the world and society in which one lives. Authors Richard Abcarian, Marvin Klotz, & Samuel Cohen of the text book Literature: The Human Experience, (12th ed.) write, “Consider: if you love books and movies, then you know how influential they can be and you’ll probably agree that what we read makes a tremendous difference to the world we live in. You learn a great deal about your society from reading – what it values, what it condemns, how it expects you to behave, what constitutes success both economically and morally, what it sees as the very nature of good and evil.” (Abcarian, Klotz, & Cohen, 2016, pg. 3 & 4). Clearly, there is a great deal that can be learned from literature, which can be found in various forms such as, poetry, stories of fiction and nonfiction, plays, drama, etc. Yet, none of what is intended by the author for a reader to learn and understand from these literary works will be, unless an individual thoroughly evaluates and analyzes the piece of literature by actively reading and thinking in a critical manner as will be illustrated in the evaluations below of the poem “To My Dear and Loving Husband” and the drama play “A Doll’s House”. …show more content…
Prior to even reading the poem, the title indicates that this poem is written from the perspective of a wife and can be suggested that it is a poem that will illustrate a wife’s love and admiration for one’s husband. Throughout the poem it is quite noticeable that the author utilizes rhyme, beginning with an anaphora style by repeating, “If ever” at the start of lines one thru three and alliteration that creates a nice rhythmic flow (Literary Devices Editors, 2017).
