Tom Robinson is innocent in the case of Mayella Ewell’s rape case. Heck Tate and the Ewells agree that Tom Robinson beat and raped Mayella. However, on the other hand Tom Robinson states that he did not beat or rape Mayella. When Heck Tate was called up to testify he stated that he discovered Mayella on the floor with the right side of her face badly beaten with bruises that Tom Robinson had caused. As Atticus asked Tom Robinson to stand up, Scout notices something odd about him. Jem states, “He looked oddly off balance, but it was not from the way he was standing.
