The knife, a symbol of survival and death, a useful and deadly tool that can save or sever ones’ life. To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) is an organization whose mission is to help those who cannot survive in this gelid merciless world and in order to fulfill their mission the founder, Jamie Tworkowski, has installed suicide hotlines to help persuade victims worldwide to live his or her life and start anew. The original advertisement which TWLOHA had promoted was to convince those who are considering suicide that there is someone there to support them during onerous and arduous times. The setting for this gruesome act took place in the restroom because it represents a place of privacy and hiding. The words “To Write Love on her Arms” is a symbol of hope to those who are in a state of depression, suicidal thoughts, and those who are lost in their sorrow. The slight bright light under the words “You don’t have to bleed anymore” is also a beckon of hope and symbolises a way out of their misery and sorrow while the dull monotonous color set a depressing and serious setting. The surface features show that the words in the top right hand corner are trying to convince the victim that they don’t have to put themselves in anymore pain. The word “love” which is written upon the girls arm is a play on the advertizement’s intended message. While the chipped nail polish signifies the mental and physical endeavor the subject may be going through, the smudges on the word “love” symbolizes the experience of strenuous and obstreperous times in the subjects life. The dreary colors symbolize the inner-turmoil and feelings of depression and anxiety and the dark background signifies the subject’s mental stability, in which there are glimmers of white speckles which symbolizes hope; however, the glint of hope is eventually absorbed within the black and gray hues.
