Do you know someone that smokes? If you do, then you’ve seen the damaging effects that it can have. The cigarette is one of the deadliest weapons known to mankind and it has killed about 6 million people per year. A substance that has proved to be extremely harmful should not be allowed anywhere and yet our current legal system deems it acceptable. I propose a new law that prohibits the smoking of tobacco everywhere in the world on the grounds that it is a dangerous and defective product. Smoking tobacco can affect the body in numerous ways. Along with the many types of cancers that it can cause it may also result in aneurysms, strokes, asthma, pneumonia, tuberculosis, premature birth, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and type 2 diabetes. The list of health consequences continues. Besides the obvious effects that tobacco has on the person that smokes it, it can also hurt any bystander. When a person smokes in a public area there is a risk that someone will inhale the secondhand smoke which contains more than 7,000 chemicals. Since the 1964 Surgeon General’s Report, 2.5 million people have died because they breathed in secondhand smoke. Therefore, by allowing smoking to be legal we are allowing …show more content…
Also, creating tobacco requires massive pesticide use which leads to deforestation. Cigarette manufacturing consumes scarce resources for growing, curing, rolling, flavoring, packaging, transporting, and advertising tobacco. Many savannah woodlands are lost every year to obtain the charcoal used for curing the tobacco. Furthermore, cigarette manufacturing produces greenhouse gas emissions from the fossil fuels used for curing and transport; it can also create fires from careless disposal of butts and it increases medical costs from diseases caused by smoking. By preventing the smoking of tobacco everywhere we can help our planet a little bit
