“Tomorrow When the War Began” is a novel written by John Marsden, an Australian Author, in 1993. Throughout the years it has gained insane ratings, has been nominated for 15 awards and won 9 of them. Due to popularity, in 2010 a movie adaptation was released, directed by Stuart Beattie. Thus, raises the question, which is better? The original novel or movie adaptation. Some will say movie because it is quick and easy to watch and some don’t enjoy reading. Others will argue the novel. In the novel, the characters and overall mood of the story is more relatable. The plot itself is more interesting in the novel because it’s the original text. Also the genre of the book reaches a wider audience then the movie.

In the novel, “Tomorrow, when the war began” is set in a town called Wirrawee. The story begins with teenager Ellie who wants to go on a camping trip with her friends; Corrie, Homer, Robyn, Kevin and Lee. They choose to go to a place called Hell, where it is believed no one has ever gone besides one urban myth, the Hermit. This is best demonstrated with the Hermit from Hell. In the novel readers learn that the Hermit is an urban legend who murdered his wife and baby. When the teenagers find the documents, they learn that he is an ex-army man and what he did wasn’t completely horrendous. There was no mention of the Hermit in the film. The Hermit added more mystery to the plot which captivates readers more. When the teenagers found the documents they also learnt the significance about recoding your life and legacy. Therefore, the novel is more significant, dynamic and interesting, and people find better entertainment reading the
