The mudders who compete in these events agree to live out the mudder pledge, and repeat it before every race begins. “We understand that Tough Mudder is not a race, but a challenge. We put teamwork and camaraderie before our course time. We do not whine, kids whine. We help our fellow mudders complete the course. We overcome our fears” (Pledge). Each of the five lines in the pledge has a very special meaning and applies not only to the race, but is a way to help people succeed in everyday life. The first line, meaning, “There’s mindfulness and strategy that goes along with Tough Mudder in order to make sure that the challenge isn’t as taxing, and life operates the same way. Slow down. Take your time. Make sure that importance beats out urgency, because urgency shouldn’t be what takes up your time” (Vardy). This particular event starts with a challenge known as Fire in Your Hole, which is the tallest Tough Mudder obstacle in the history of the event; it reaches a high of fifteen feet in the air. Remember the first time you went off the high dive as a kid? It’s almost the same thing, however the difference is that instead of jumping you’re sliding down through fire and into a cold muddy water pit. This obstacle starts by you and your teammates climbing up a net and wood ladder, once at the top you must go down a near-vertical slide. On the way down, gravity kicks in and you must go through a wall five foot tall of flames and fall into the muddy water pit. They say to lie down as flat as possible with your arms crossed on top of your chest and just let your body drop.
