Tracy Chevalier’s novel Girl with a Pearl Earring does not romanticize art, artists, history, and people of the Dutch Golden Age. The novel shows the hardships of its people of the Netherlands and the Great Plague from the great Dutch Golden Age. Chevalier and Berger both show explains of the hardship of being an artist in their era. Berger states on page 13 of Ways of Seeing that the last two great paintings done by Dutch artist Frans Hals were in fact always in debt when he painted the Governors and Governesses of Alms house.
