Tracy Kidder’s book Mountains Beyond Mountains follows the life of Doctor Paul Farmer over the course of about six years and the work he has done to help the poor people throughout the world. At the very beginning we get an introduction to how Tracy Kidder had first met Doctor Paul Farmer while at a Haitian army outpost to report on American soldiers. After the scene where they first meet, the rest of the first half of the book consists mainly of the doctor’s work in Haiti on patients and building his own hospital there. During the first half we get some insight on Farmer’s past such as: his family and where he grew up, how he first became friends with his long time associate Ophelia, and how he started up Partners in Health. Characterization can refer to any point in the book where readers are able to gather the personality of Farmer through his interactions with friends and Kidder. Throughout the book we are able to identify how passionate Farmer is about helping others, how little Farmer is self-aware of his own health while he worries about the health of many around the world, and how liked Farmer is by the way he is able to make friends with just about anybody he is introduced to. The point of view is significant because it switches between first and third person depending on if the events Kidder is referring to were while he was with Farmer, or if it was a recount from Farmer himself or one is his family members or his friends. While describing Farmers childhood, Kidder uses third person P.O.V. because the descriptions came from Farmer’s siblings and mother.
