The Trail of Tears was a forced relocation of dozens of Native American tribes due to expanding land for the white men (Trail of Tears). Many battles were fought and many people died. In the end, many tribes walked thousands of miles to Oklahoma, and thousands died on the harsh journey (Cherokee Trail of Tears). The Trail of Tears depicts the most brutal genocide in American History.
First, in 1836, President Andrew Jackson presented Congress with a treaty he negotiated with the Iowas, Sacs, Fox, Otoe and Omaha tribes of the Missouri Territory (Jackson Submits Indian Treaty 1). Jackson’s policies toward the Indians were that they were an inferior race who stood in the way of American economic progress (1). The bill that Jackson presented was called the Indian Removal Act. Congress passed the bill and this action caused a number of outbreaks and wars.
The signing of the Indian Removal Act infuriated the Indians causing to major battles. Many tribes fought for their land and freedom and were going to die trying (Nightengale). The two most known battles were Little Bighorn and Wounded Knee. “In December 2009, President Barack Obama signed a bill that included an official apology to all American Indian Tribes” (Nix). Congress is making efforts to apologize to the Native Americans by giving them more freedom, land, symbols, and historic markers (Nix).
The Trail of Tears is a devastating memory in American history. It caused many battles, deaths, hatred, and bitterness between the Indians and U.S. It concluded with the long journey to Oklahoma, where thousands of Indians died while traveling.
