1) River Island is a private limited company and it was set up in 1948 by Bernard Lewis and his brothers in London. It is one of the most successful companies on the High Street, it has nearly 300 stores across the UK, Ireland and also internationally across Asia, the Middle East and Europe. River Island tries to bring new and original fashion to customers, it has to be stylish yet affordable. River Island operates a global supply chain network, sourcing and manufacturing its products throughout the world. Their supply chain partners are important to them as building strong, long term and ethically responsible manufacturing relationships are key to our continued success. River Island has franchises over the world throughout the Middle East, Europe and also the Far East. River Island have a strong ethical belief on trading and making the business profitable yet responsible, they believe their customers expect meaningful long term relationships with employees, suppliers and communities they also believe it’s a good business practise this is because they won’t be losing anyone important to their business if they keep them happy. River Island also aim to be environmentally friendly this is because they have incorporated the use of renewable energy sources into their operations and reduced the level of product packaging, they also recycle and use biodegradable materials whenever they can. River Island also work actively with their suppliers and official agencies all around the world to improve the working conditions of workers in factories and also safeguarding and improving the rights of workers in those factories which supply their products. In June 2008 River Island became a member of Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI). River Island are committed in the ETI base code and make sure they follow it some examples of the codes of the base code are:
Employment is freely chosen, working conditions are safe and hygienic, child labour shall not be used, living wages are paid, working hours are not excessive and no harsh and inhumane treatment is allowed etc.
River Island have also joined the Distributor Take Back Scheme where they have contributed funding towards the provision of improved recycling facilities throughout the UK for all customers. River Island also work with a lot of charities/organisations to improve communities. Some of the charities/organisations they work with are Epilepsy Society and Young Epilepsy, Newlife Foundation, Magic Bus, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Chickenshed, Sightsavers, British Red Cross, Drugfam and many others. The purpose of the River Island site is to allow customers to shop online 24/7 as it’s flexible and is always there for customers to access.


The layout of the site is simple and easy to use this is because it has a navigation bar which allows you to browse and look at all the different products it has to offer and you can also refine your results by the colour, size, cost etc of the product. The website also has a search bar which allows you to type in what you are looking for so this means it will be less time consuming as the product will automatically appear and you won’t have to take long searching for the product, however the disadvantage of this is you may not always find the product you want to find as it may not come up or you may not know the product name. The website also has pictures of the products it offers and they have pictures of the products in different angles so it allows you to see the product from all aspects this means you know exactly what the product is like.

This allows you to see the product in different angles e.g. the side view, front view, inside etc. It also recommends other products that it would go with, the website also gives you a detailed description about the product this allows you to make a judgement on whether you want to purchase the product or not as you know how it will be like.
