The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne is a novel that touches on secrecy within a society that causes tension and hypocrisy. The novel tells the story of Hester Prynne, who had a child through an affair that leads her to have difficulty with penitence and finding worthiness within a community. The society plays a significant role in which it emphasises its values and beliefs. The Scarlet Letter is apart of the literary movement called Transcendentalism, which developed during the 1830’s and 1840’s.
