Transcendentalism is an American philosophy that began in the early 1800's. This radical system believes that one gains knowledge through nature, the self, spirit, and institution. As Transcendentalism evolved, so did its presence in the literary and artistic movement. In today's society, the system's core ideas are still found in song lyrics, magazine articles, television shows, and books. Spiritualism plays a key role in developing Transcendentalism and defends the system's beliefs greatly. For example, spiritualism defends Transcendentalism philosophy through the system's appreciation for the divine and it's almighty creation. This connection is mainly evident in "Nature", when Emerson vocalizes that "Nature always wears the colors of the spirit" (Emerson 2). In simple terms, the author is stating how nature has the unique ability to reflect one's spiritual side. Emerson later adds on,"When we speak of nature in this manner, we have a distinct but most poetical sense in the mind" (Emerson 3). Emerson is stating that one's soul views nature as a form of poetry and art. These quotes mainly display the key connection between spirituality and Transcendentalism philosophy through the belief that nature withholds spiritual truth. With Eugene being located far off in the woods, it would allow the townspeople to explore the surrounding nature and fulfill their spirit with vast knowledge. Concluding, spiritualism plays a key role in developing Transcendentalism and defends the system's beliefs greatly. Ralph Waldo Emerson took this key connection and applied it greatly in some of his well-written texts, one example being his popularized book "Nature". Analyzing this text, it is evident that Spirituality and Transcendentalism philosophy complement each other profoundly.
