Buxton (2006) discovered that the most pressing concerns to a spouse with a transgender partner was related to their sexual and personal identity. Many spouses feel as though their partner being transgender has to do with them being sexually inadequate. Bischof et al., (2011) conducted a Thematic Analysis on wives who stay with husbands who come out as transgender. The most commonly reported feelings were self-blame and the feeling of being invisible. Many spouses admitted to retreating into their own closets to cope in isolation. “Spouses lose a sense of who they are as they try to adapt to the unexpected revelation about their partners” (PFLAG, 2006, p.5).
