By 1970, Chronic Wasting Disease was classified as a Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) in which deer, elk are common targets. Soon after the first identified case, the Colorado and Wyoming Wildlife Management Agencies prohibited migration of deer and elk from their research facilities (Spickler, 2004).
The first case of CWD in free-ranging deer and elk was in 1980 again in Colorado and Wyoming. Furthermore, the first identified positive case of this disease in farmed elk was found in 1997 in South Dakota, for this reason infected captive elk and deer herds have since then been acknowledged in Kansas, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Canada (Spickler, 2004).
The development of CWD has not been fully indicated.
