Traditionally, good health is viewed as the absence of disease, with an emphasis on prevention through immunization and screening. In light of modern time, an important, yet easily overlooked aspect of health promotion is reminding patients about the simple steps they can take to improve their health. For instance, it is well documented that physical inactivity is a risk factor for a variety of chronic diseases and conditions that affect older adults (king, 2001). Yet, only a minority of older adults are meeting the daily recommended levels of physical activity . Changing an individual's lifestyle to include regular physical activity can be a difficult endeavour. Older adults, in particular, have less social support, and higher rates of disability than any other age group. In order to develop effective strategies to increase regular physical activity among older adults, the gerontological nurse can use the transtheoretical model of behaviour change to assess an individual's readiness to act on a new behaviour (Vicki & Armer, 1996).
