ERQ was developed by Rydell. Thorell and Bohlin (2007) in order to measure children’s ability to manage intense emotions in the face of emotionally challenging situations. The researchers provide twenty-two emotionally challenging vignettes occurring in the context of family, school, and peer relationships. Children also are presented alternatives for regulating anger, sadness or fear. Each emotion is operationalized with illustrative sentences, for example, “ If I am angry and my teacher tells me to calm down, I can control myself”.
