Traumatic Brain Injuries Over 1.4 million people a year in the United States suffer a traumatic brain injury (“Traumatic Brain Injury”). Traumatic Brain injuries, also known as TBI, can cause extreme long term effects. Just because someone may seem physically healed, does not mean they are mentally healed or prepared to return to normal, everyday things. People who deal with TBI’s can pass a physical, which does not mean they are up to par and fully functional. Most struggle with their cognitive skills, coherence of speech, and other basic skills such as walking and talking. Some beginning results of TBIs are concussions. Concussions can be caused by a blow to the head, falling, or external mechanical force causing brain dysfunction. Some of the most common immediate effects may include: loss of consciousness, headache, nausea, and fatigue. When dealing with brain injuries looking for immediate effects can help prevent long term effects.(“About Traumatic Brain Injury”) If immediate effects are not properly treated they can develop into long term effects which can affect someone for the rest of their life. It is increasingly recognized, that psychotherapy is an important complement to this neurological response. Cope has argued that "the majority of recovering TBI patients are now seen as potentially benefiting from some form of psychotherapeutic/rehabilitation treatment(“Communication Patterns”). Brain injuries affect the coherence of speech in many different ways.
