To continue this a little further, America had many arguments with France. They were once all allies until a big problem occurred. In 1778, France and the U.S created a treaty which caused the U.S to participate in the French Revolution. During this time, France believed that the Jay Treaty was interfering with their Treaty of 1778. In Document 3 it stated, “...to keep ourselves always distinct and separate from it if we can, we are endeavoring (trying) to adjust all our differences with France by amicable negotiation..” John Adams desperately wanted to avoid war with France and sent three delegations to France to meet the minister, Talleyrand but was only met up with three lower class delagotories. John Adams called this the XYZ Affair.
