In 1899 the United States Senate ratified the treaty of Paris officially enabling the United States control of Spain’s former colonies. Lastly politics contributed to the senates ratification of the treaty of Paris through controlling voting and partisanship. Many factors contributed to influencing the senate to ratify the treaty of Paris in 1899 such as social, public support from expansionists and political. The support of the United States public is a social factor that influenced the Senate to ratify the Treaty of Paris. The public supports both freeing Cuba from Spanish rule and increasing America’s economic interest in foreign land. The ratification of the treaty would free Cuba and open up new markets for America goods. William Jennings Bryan, Democratic nominee for the Presidency, encouraged his fellow Democrats to vote for the treaty because he realized “if the people are against us the minority of the Senate cannot save us”.
