Specific Goal: To inform how Elizabeth Magie Phillips interest in the political world lead to the idea behind Monopoly.
Thesis: Elizabeth Magie Phillips interest in politics lead to her creation of a unique game that was the blueprint for Monopoly.
Intro:
I. Monopoly can be found in 43 languages and more than 275 million have been sold.
II. I will share who was the real inventor behind Monopoly’s foundation.
III. For as long as I can remember my family and have had Sunday barbecues and played games.
One of those cherished games for me was Monopoly.
IV. Elizabeth Magie Phillips interest in politics lead to her creation of a unique game that was the blueprint for Monopoly. Transition: Politics were always present in Elizabeth's life.
Body:
I.
Elizabeth was very much interested in politics in 1906 and an avid political follower. A. Elizabeth's political influence started early in her life.
1.As I read from the Library Journal article titled Monopolists:
Obsession, Fury and the the scandal behind the World’s favorite game; Elizabeth's father was a “journalist who reported and followed political figures”.
2.Elizabeth was immersed in politics at a young age and was “able to learn and satisfy her political curiosity” (IBID) .
B. Elizabeth was a follower of economist Henry George who argued against the ownership of land.
1. Elizabeth believed that “common land and resources” was not something that people should “own for their own personal gain”
(IBID).
2. Elizabeth was a proactive follower and wanted to share her
Georgist beliefs to all Americans. Transition: With this desire Elizabeth paved the way for one of America's iconic game.
II. While the game Elizabeth invented would not reap as much success, it was the fundamental precursor for Monopoly.
A. Elizabeth's game was initially an educational tool.
