Throughout many years, women have struggled to have equality in society. Women were expected to wash dishes, do the laundry, cook, and clean for their husbands without any complain or any reproach. Susan Glaspell and Henrik Ibsen are renowned for their work and are considered to have written some of the best plays in their time, which happen to be around the women's rights movement began. Many symbols in their plays symbolize greater things than we first realize. “Trifles” written by Glaspell and “A Doll House” written by Ibsen are two plays that truly demonstrate symbolism at its best. Both Glaspell and Ibsen have written prominent work that continues to excel. Anyone can easily use symbolism but not anyone can arrange it in a way like they do. Symbolism, when used accordingly, can “evoke interest in a reader” (Literary Devices.) and can indeed make literature more intriguing.
