The Hostility of Europe

More than 10 million people were killed in World War One, making it one of the most deleterious wars of all time. World War One consisted of two sides; the Triple Entente which was made up of Great Britain, France, and Russia and the Triple Alliance which was made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. WW1 was the world's first “Great War” which soldiers mainly fought in trenches and there were alliances made. The “Great War” was fought on the Eastern and Western Front. It started on July 28, 1914 and ended on November 11, 1918. The initial spark of WW1 was the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife on June 28, 1914. The members of the Triple Alliance were Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The members of the Triple Entente were Russia, France, and Great Britain.( Map of Europe on Eve of WW1; Document B) This meant that there were going to be two sides of the war and that the alliances were going to have each other's back. Triple Alliances and Triple Entente mattered because without them everybody would be fighting solo. Austria-Hungary had such strong nationalism for their country that they made sure that Serbia “condemn to this dangerous propaganda against the monarchy.” (ultimatum that was sent to Serbia; Document C) This ultimatum showed how much pride Austria-Hungary had because it stated just how far they would be willing to go for their country. In Origins of the World War, Sidney Bradshaw shared that the political and military leaders had such pride in their country that they “did certain things which lead to the mobilization [of their armies for war] and [finally] the declaration of war.” (Document F) This meant that leaders were doing outrageous things just to protect their country. This mattered because if the leaders did not do certain things then the war could have been prevented.
