In Ethan and Joel Coen’s western film True Grit, a young stubborn driven girl Mattie sets out on an adventure alongside a harsh marshal to track down the murderer of her father. Mattie is determined to create vengeance for her father’s death by bringing in the man who is responsible for it, Tom Chaney, a rough true wild western villain. Putting trust into the meanest pitiless cruelest marshal Rooster Cogburn, they both embark on a journey through the uncivilized woods of the Indian nation in Arkansas to catch Chaney. Throughout the movie Mattie is surrounded by a variety of darker characters each having their own qualities to characterize them, whether that be plain cruel and having no mercy or somewhere in the between still holding some care for others.

His true personality is not exposed until the later scenes of the movie, but the only thought of who he is in the beginning is developed through what questions he is being asked at the trail. A man asks Rooster if he can remember the amount of people he has killed, Rooster cannot answer the question honestly, he tells multiple different answers which indicates that to him death is just death, he does not see it as an end to a life but more of an everyday normal thing to those who cross him. While Mattie was looking to find the perfect marshal to help her, she decided on picking Rooster who was described as a harsh heartless man with true grit. True grit can be defined as a person who is undeniably determined to accomplish their end goal. Rooster proves his true grit by never giving up on Mattie throughout the film, even after she is ripped away by the villain himself Tom Chaney and placed into the hands of Lucky Ned, the boss of the villains.
