Truman Capote's A Christmas Memory

In the short story “A Christmas Memory”, written by author Truman Capote, we read about an unusual friendship between seven-year-old Buddy and his “sixty-something” year old friend. Overall I really enjoyed reading the story. My favorite part was reading about the unique relationship between the protagonist Buddy, and his friend. Capote writes, “ I am seven; she is sixty-something, We are cousins, very distant ones, and we have lived together—well, as long as I can remember. Other people inhabit the house, relatives; and though they have power over us, and frequently make us cry, we are not, on the whole, too much aware of them. We are each other's best friend.” This illustrates the close bond that Buddy and his friend have created with each other over the years. I admire that even though there is a significant age difference between the two, they still build a very tight friendship, learn to accept and appreciate their flaws, and love each other unconditionally.

For example, towards the end of the story Buddy and his friend are separated when he is sent away to a military school, overtime his friend’s health begins to decline, and eventually she passes away. Capote writes, “A message saying so merely confirms a piece of news some secret vein had already received, severing from me an irreplaceable part of myself, letting it loose like a kite on a broken string. That is why, walking across a school campus on this particular December morning, I keep searching the sky. As if I expected to see, rather like hearts, a lost pair of kites hurrying toward heaven.”, emphasizing how truly devastated he is over of the lost of his friend, but even though his friend is gone that love that they have for each other is still present and she will live on through his memories that they created
