Written Response In the article, “Why Truman Dropped the Bomb,” Richard Frank writes about the events that made Truman drop the bomb. Frank writes about the side that supported the bomb, as well as the side that opposed it. His thesis is the first thing in the paper. The thesis is, “Sixty years after Hiroshima, we now have the secret intercepts that shaped his decisions.” His biggest main point was that the U.S. developed a radio system to both hack the Japanese and to communicate with fellow Allies. He would then break that down and say what each set of messages would do. Frank then listed which people had access to the documents, and which people did not have access. Another one of his main points what the debate if Japan was going to surrender or not. Frank would give the opposing side as well as the side that supported the bomb. The next point Frank brought up was that Japan was trying to reach a peace agreement. This argument wasn’t as strong as the other arguments. He brought up the idea but then shot it down almost immediately. The last point Frank had was what the generals thought of Operation Olympic. Frank would write about the opinions of General MacArthur, General Marshall, Admiral Nimitz, and Admiral King’s opinions on Operation Olympic. Frank then went into detail about casualties if the Allied forces pursued the idea of Operation Olympic. …show more content…
However, the most interesting words I learned came from the final project paper. I learned the following words in the article “Why Truman Dropped the Bomb”: orthodoxy (conforming to what is generally or traditionally accepted as right or true), crystallize (make or become definite and clear), delegitimize (withdraw legitimate status), feebleness (lacking physical strength), and succinct (briefly and clearly expressed). The word logs through out the semester has raised my vocabulary a great
