When tragedy strikes and no one can make sense of the world, people use their talents to try and express their personal feelings and the emotions of human kind. The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 is a prime example of terror and confusion that spread across the nation after tragedy struck. The painting, Disbelief by Lun-Yi Tsai and the poem, “Tuesday 9/11/01” by Lucille Clifton both connects to the strong idea of fear in the eyes of people after the 9/11 attacks. The painting showcases innocent reactions to the devastating September attacks. The poem written from the painting describes the mood of the nation after the tragedy, expressing how we are not safe from destruction. “Tuesday 9/11/01” describes that “no day will ever be the same” (2,3) indicating the fear across the nation will forever be a stamp in history and will not be forgotten. The poem repeats idea that, ”God has blessed America” (6,8) and this makes all of the shock come together with confusion and fear because God cannot protect from this utter destruction. This realization can be terrifying and hard for some to believe. The poem is brief but powerful, emphasizing that the world will no longer be the same after this event. This powerful realization creates a tone of fear for the future, while the somber mood is created by the short repetition of, “all fear is one all life all death all one” (11,12). These short words group citizens together as one, while the nation proceeds to come together to rebuild. The poem also compares situations around the world to that of 9/11 by stating, “they know this storm in otherwheres israel ireland palestine” (4,5). The painting focuses on the bystanders of the attack while the poem added the comparison to the destruction from around the world, which was not part of my initial response to the painting alone.
