At the end of Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare, all characters seem to have a future laid out for them except Antonio. Viola and Orsino, Olivia and Sebastian, and even Maria and Sir Toby were able to have their happy ending. However, although Antonio repeatedly declared his love for Sebastian throughout the play, he is left silent in the last scene once Viola and Sebastian were reunited. This might suggest that Antonio’s bond with Sebastian was strictly platonic. For my monologue, I chose to write a soliloquy that would show how Antonio is only silent because he is thinking over the situation. My monologue reveals how Antonio’s silence at the end of Act 5 is due to him taking the time ponder how many risks he faced for Sebastian and how he selflessly move on in order to let Sebastian be happy with his true love, proving him to be both a courageous person and loyal friend.

A few of the main themes of the play related to the risks, deception, and madness that stems from love. As shown in the play through other characters, like Olivia and Sebastian, it is easy to forget to think rationally and to see the truth of our actions. Both of them were able to fall in love quickly and be blinded by that desire they had. In my monologue, Antonio recognizes this quality of love, so instead of being silent because he is not questioning anything, he is silent because he is trying to come to peace with himself. From the beginning of Twelfth Night, Antonio has been courageous. Antonio saves Sebastian's life in the shipwreck and then travels out to a city where he is at risk of encountering enemies of his.
