Twinning In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart

Could anyone purposely murder a child? Sadly, people do so often. A women recently cooked her son in the microwave until he died. When people in the United Stated murder or mutilate their children, the parent is sentenced to life in prison and possibly considered mentally ill. Unfortunately, this is not the case in some societies In Things Fall Apart, society sees twin births as an evil omen. “Nwoye had heard that twins were put in earthen pots and thrown away in the [evil forest].” (61; pt. 1, ch. 7) In other societies though, the population sees any birth as an amazing gift. Individuals can gain a deeper understanding of twinning by considering the history of twinning, by knowing if yams play a part in helping women conceive twins, and by recognizing the different types of twins. Most people consider twinning, another name for conceiving twins, a rarity. “Twinning happens once in every one hundred births” (Ball and Hill). “Twins share on average about half of their genes.” (Peeking at Twins) Giving birth to identical twins is called monozygotic. Being monozygotic mean that the infants share a placenta and an amniotic sac. “If the babies are identical this can be even more problematic, as it raises issues such as how to cope with two individuals that appear to be one.” (Ball and Hill) If the children are identical, then they can switch places. This would mean that one twin would fill in for the other is they wanted to play a joke on someone or if they other was sick and needed to be somewhere.
