Another example of this assertion is in the literary classic, The Great Gatsby. The story is about the growing upper class of America in the 1920's. The main character, Jay Gatsby, uses his wealth to try and win over his long-time love interest, Daisy. Daisy is easily impressed by materialistic objects, and sobs while she tells Gatsby how much she loves his shirts. The perks of Gatsby's wealth distract Daisy from appreciating everything else he has to offer. This scene highlights the fact that because all Daisy cares about is Gatsby's money, she is not really in love with him as a person. What Daisy really loves is Gatsby's rich lifestyle, and the benefits his money has to offer
