The Two Party Pickle As Americans we are expected to pick a team when it comes to electing officials to represent us in government: the Republicans or the Democrats. I was born in New Jersey to a Republican family who began to instil conservative values in me at a very young age. Growing up, my father would often times talk about “the good old days” when Ronald Reagan was president, Reaganomics, and how if you want to be successful you need to take the initiative to make something of yourself. I was raised upon believing that the problem with our country is that people don’t advocate for themselves, and that people have entitlement issues. The second president of our great nation John Adams, warned us of the dangers of the two party system over two hundred years ago. John Adams wrote in 1780,“There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties, each arranged under its leader, and converting measures in opposition to each other. This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.” As Adam’s said, “A division of the Republic” is exactly what we see today in our country with the Republican and Democratic party. These two extremely powerful parties focus a lot of their energy and time on opposing one another which takes away the democratic influence of us as Americans, and leads to nothing but disagreement and haste toward one another. In this year’s presidential election, Donald Trump has spent his entire campaign bullying, belittling, and making racist comments rather than focusing on what the people need and representing us. Trump’s political views are very conservative and business oriented and on the other side of the race is Bernie Sanders, a potential democratic nominee,who believes in socialism. This polarization in the two party system like John Adams and George Washington warned us about, is essentially what is destroying our democracy and diminishing the power of the
