The poem “Two Sisters of Persephone”, by Sylvia Plath introduces the lives of two very different sisters. The author uses the play between light and dark, this duality is really the personalities of the sisters as they travel through life. This can be seen as the dark side of the girl that sits in her dark wainscoted room and works all day as her life flies by. The light side of the girl is full of life and falling in love with a man. The use of figurative language when describing nature and colors throughout the poem helps depict the differences between the two. Through Sylvia’s utilization of nature and color she was able to create an image of two paths. Three themes are shown through this poem that are very significant. One very consequential theme that is shown in the first stanza is the light and dark dual personalities. These themes all tie together to find the true meaning behind the poem of how it portrays the different paths of life and it's outcomes. The theme of no matter what life they chose to live, they brought out similar outcomes is visually perceived in the last two stanzas as the language commences with nature and color as the girl is beginning to blossom and become a woman and bear a child to become sour and bitter. Plath’s utilization of punctuation and periods helps the reader know that she transmuted from verbalizing about the light side and begins to talk about how the dark personality of the girl turned out as she was husbanded by worms and died a virgin. Sylvia’s ingenious thoughts and language create a picture of dual personalities with similar outcomes through the use of nature and color to help share this
